We participated in the Inaugural Debra BlackCrow City proclamation for Missing & Murdered Indigenous Persons day of awareness with tree planting and 5k prayer run/walk. Organized by Her38roses, PLAN, Fifth Sun Project, City of Las Vegas Tule Springs and BlackCrow family.
(Note: This was not a Nevada Plants event, we just showed up in support!)
We partnered with Southwest Gas for their first BLUE event of the year supporting healthy and sustainable communities. We planted more than 80 trees and plants around the campus, installed a butterfly and sensory garden, and spread 38 tons of landscape rock.
We planted native plants along a 475-foot segment of restored stream channel on private land, in Shoshone, California to help restore and enhance the riparian habitat of the Shoshone Springbrook from CA 127 downstream into the Shoshone Wetlands. We aim to expand the current range of the Shoshone pupfish which was once believed to be extinct.
It’s been one year since the Solidarity Fridge began its delicious garden space. My, they have grown! Victoria Flores and partners expanded the giving garden, planted more fruit trees, created a block party of available fruit with her neighbors. Our first Block Party gave 29 residents fruit trees! Special thanks to Master Gardener Yutaka Nomura who gave a talk on fruit tree pruning. Big thanks to all who came to plant.
We partnered with Farmer Pete from 702 Gardens, The Solidarity Fridge, Fifth Sun Project, UNLV Campus Community Garden, ViraGrow, Slow Food Las Vegas, Desert Secret Garden, East Las Vegas Seed Share, Terra Firma Organics, and UNR Extension to plant fruit trees at Arturo Cambiero Elementary School.
We partnered with Rise Up Nevada Education, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, and Housing Assistance Corp. to help The Obodo Collective put the finishing touches on their urban farm in Las Vegas’ Historic Westside.
Thank you Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom and City of Las Vegas Councilwoman Olivia Díaz for the support, to our partners Sierra Club, Chispa Nevada, XL Landscape, ASLA Nevada, Southwest Gas, US Forest Service, and Nevada Division of Forestry, and the neighborhood who said YES to almost 90 trees!
We tabled at Eco-topia and donated an artichoke agave to Ferguson’s Downtown in remembrance of the victims of the Route 91 Harvest Festival tragedy. Remembering the tragedy, the loved ones, the survivors, the first responders, all medical staff and all the extended family, and all those who continue on the path of recovery.
“From the darkest night comes the strongest light”
Special thanks to Starla Newcomb for creating Eco-Topia, and asking us to attend. We raffled off an apple and pomegranate tree, and had lots of fun with partners and met new friends. We learned a lot from urban farmers David the Green Samaritan and Farmer Jen, and met new groups who are ready to plant!
With the help of Master Gardener Judy Tobler, we planted fruit trees in a local community garden.
