Las Vegas ranked number 1 for the biggest difference between urban and rural temperatures, which average 2.4 degrees hotter, according to a report by Climate Central. But Las Vegas topped the list at 7.3 degrees average, and up to 24 degrees hotter on extreme days.
The story made local headlines with city officials commenting on the need for new trees to replace existing canopy in the city.
“We think there’s a lot of tree canopy that exists in Las Vegas today that probably isn’t going to survive these warmer temperatures,” said Tom Perrigo, Chief Sustainability Officer for the City of Las Vegas, adding that along with planting more trees the city will need to replace existing canopy with more heat resistant trees.
